Dental Implants - Are You a Good Candidate?

Dental implants, also known as root canals or bone bridges, are surgically planted into the bone and fuse with it. A dental implant is basically a surgical part that interfaces with your bone to sustain a dental artificial implant for a tooth or teeth, including a crown, denture, bridge, or orthodontic bridge. These devices are made up of titanium or dental implants and may also include other materials such as fixed dental implants, abutment, dentures, crowns, and caps. There are three types of dental implants: metal dental implants, tooth-supported implants, and implant-supported implants. Below is an explanation of each.

The most common type of dental implant used to replace missing teeth is a metal dental implant. This procedure is usually performed on patients who have lost one or more teeth due to extreme tooth decay, broken or cracked teeth, or severe damage resulting from some type of trauma. Patients who have undergone this procedure can regain one or more of their lost teeth by way of a dental implant. This is a permanent procedure and the full cost of the surgery and all associated treatment is covered by insurance companies. The amount of tooth implants to be replaced determines the length of time the procedure will take.

Another type of dental implants is tooth-supported prosthodontics. This procedure is performed by a periodontist or a surgeon who has undergone a specialized program in prosthodontics and is certified by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). This type of procedure requires that a person's jawbones be fused together to create a prosthetic tooth that can then be placed securely in the jaw to help support the prosthetic tooth. Once the fusion has healed, a prosthetic tooth is created to resemble the natural teeth of the patient. This prosthetic tooth is anchored to the jawbone through screws and titanium screws that are installed by the periodontist or the surgeon.

A dental implants known as an abutment is used when multiple teeth need to be replaced because of extensive tooth loss. This procedure is often referred to as "artificial teeth." An abutment is created by the same process used for creating prosthetic teeth, but it consists of only one artificial tooth. This one tooth is bonded to the jawbone and the gum, so that it will be equally supported throughout the gums and teeth.

With dental implants, your oral health will improve greatly because there will be less risk of infection and the chances of dental plaque buildup will be substantially reduced. These implants can be used to correct such problems as worn down teeth, receding gums, gum atrophy, and even fillings that have fallen out. By making small adjustments to your oral hygiene, you can dramatically improve your overall oral health. By following good oral hygiene practices you can ensure that you do not develop any of these conditions later in life.

When considering dental implants, it is important to be honest with your dentist about your current health situation. Your dentist will be able to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure and whether dental implants are right for you. Dental implants may be recommended to you if your bone structure does not support dentures or if you are not a good candidate for them due to your health conditions. For more information regarding whether you are a good candidate for this procedure, speak with your dentist today.
