Tooth Extraction Information

Tooth extractions may be performed by a general dentist or a specialist known as an oral surgeon. Normally a tooth is firmly encased in a bony socket and attached by a ligament.

Tooth extraction can be a painless procedure. Before extracting a tooth, the dentist will give a local anesthetic via injection with a syringe. Tooth extraction is performed for many reasons. Teeth are often removed because they are impacted, that is, they cannot erupt normally on their own. Tooth extraction healing takes only about five to seven days to be mostly complete. After seven days the healing is good enough to eat harder foods without causing pain.

Tooth extraction can be performed with local anesthesia if the tooth is exposed and appears to be easily removable in one piece. The dentist or oral surgeon uses an instrument called an elevator to luxate, or loosen, the tooth; widen the space in the underlying bone; and break the tiny elastic fibers that attach the tooth to the bone.

Dry Socket

Dry sockets may last for several days and may cause severe pain that sometimes includes ear pain. Dry sockets typically create a foul odor or bad taste. Visually, if you can see down into the socket, the extraction site appears "dry," in the sense that you just see exposed bone.Dry socket is treated with a special dressing.

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt within the mouth. When they align properly, and gum tissue is healthy, wisdom teeth do not have to be removed. Wisdom teeth removal in the late teens or early twenties can make much milder and less likely occurring complications. Wisdom tooth removal at a young age is a routine procedure and it can save you from many dental problems in future.

Pain after tooth extraction is the most common tooth extraction problem and is most common after a surgical tooth extraction. Good care after tooth extraction greatly assists tooth extraction healing and often helps avoid an infected tooth extraction socket. Painless tooth extraction does not mean the anaesthesis of the tooth to be extracted, nor that of the surrounding area. Before injecting the necessary material, the doctor outs a special, fruit flavoured surface anaesthetic gel onto the place of the injection.

Removal of the offending impacted tooth or teeth usually resolves these problems. Early removal is recommended to avoid such future problems and to decrease the surgical risk involved with the procedure. Removing even a single tooth can lead to problems associated with chewing ability or jaw joint function. Additionally, teeth whose alignment has changed can become traps for food or be harder to clean thoroughly, thus placing them at greater risk for tooth decay and gum disease.Impacted wisdom teeth can be extremely painful, as well as harmful to your oral health. Symptoms are easy to spot: severe discomfort, inflammation, and some kinds of infections. Impaction is a common reason for the extraction of wisdom teeth. Extraction is the only known method that will prevent further problems.

Oral surgeons are specialists who are trained to give nitrous oxide, an intravenous sedative, or a general anesthetic to relieve pain. Extracting an impacted tooth or a tooth with curved roots typically requires cutting through gum tissue to expose the tooth.Dentists check this problem before extraction. It requires surgery if it does not heal spontaneously. Dentists recommend that impacted wisdom teeth be removed when patients are between ages 14 and 22 ? The complications of wisdom tooth extraction increase with age, so we recommend that teenagers visit our practice for a dental exam during which we can check the wisdom teeth and decide on the appropriate course of treatment.

Normally, in conventional extraction sockets , the bone grows back on its own once the tooth is removed. Growth can be enhanced by adding bone to the site at the time of the extraction.Normal drifting of the teeth to compensate for this wear ensured that space was available for most wisdom teeth to erupt by adolescence. The modern diet, which is much softer, and the popularity of orthodontic tooth straightening procedures produce a fuller dental arch, which quite commonly doesn't leave room for the wisdom teeth to erupt, thereby setting the stage for problems when the final four molars enter the mouth.

Avoid brushing around the extraction. And don't use any toothpaste. Avoid spitting or rinsing during the first 24 hours so as not to dislodge the clot and cause alveolitis.
